Phil Hinton is a forester and designer maker, who uses local, sustainable timber to make a range of individual indoor and outdoor furniture and sculpture.

He is based in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

He takes his inspiration from the woodland and the raw material which is obtained in tree form direct from the woodland. Conversion of the trees to planking takes place in the woodland using a mobile sawmill before being seasoned for several years.

The majority of timber comes from Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire where Phil has a contract to cut coppice. The main species used are oak, sweet chestnut, ash, yew, beech and cherry depending on availability and the required end use of the product. For example oak and chestnut are used for outdoor items due to their natural durability.

Working as he does from the tree to the finished product means the design process is guided by the raw material and enables maximum use to be made of the precious and beautiful resource.

The range of products includes larger items such as tables, chairs, benches and sculptures, along with many smaller items including bowls, table lamps, clocks and mirrors.

Please find examples of work in the Gallery. Many of these designs can be made to order and to a specific size depending on availability of the appropriate wood.
